A lot of what we believe about the common cold is myth. No, you won't get a cold because you went outside with a wet head or slept in a drafty room. But here's what is true. When you're sick, some common mistakes can make your cold symptoms worse -- or prevent you from getting better.  

If you're feeling crummy and stuffed up, here are 7 things that could make your cold worse.

1. Avoid catching other people’s germs – carry a small bottle of hand sanitizer with you. It is small enough to fit into your Kate Spade purse and handy for those times when you are traveling on the Dubai Metro.

2. Don’t be generous with your germs – if you have a cough and are sneezing frequently put your hand over your mouth and carry tissues.

3. Take drugs – what is the point in suffering right? If you feel a cold coming on then take cold and flu relievers. The sooner you take medication the sooner it will begin to work. Always read the label and if symptoms persist consult your doctor.

4. Drink plenty of fluids – water is best but tea and coffee also count as part of your recommended daily fluid intake. Aim to drink 2-2.5 liters per day.

5. When you feel better, start exercising – exercise boosts your immune system and helps prevent illness. Exercise is not recommended during illness.

6. Eat better – the reason you catch colds easily could be due to a poor diet. Fill your plate with vegetables, fish and whole grains and cut out simple sugars and foods high in saturated fats.

7. Sleep more – aim to go to bed between 10-11pm. Studies show that people who have eight high-quality hours of sleep, weigh less and think better. You’ll probably feel happier too.
